I’m Not Okay…That’s Okay

May is Mental Health Awareness month, I am so grateful that mental health awareness is becoming so mainstream. This is something that should be talked about openly and often. I have lost friends and family members due to mental health issues. I have close friends and family member that deal with different mental health issues, and I myself have dealt with bouts of depression, anxious feelings and panic attacks. Thankfully they have been few and fleeting and not of the clinical nature.

About 5 years ago I started having panic attacks. I’m not sure why they started. At the time I had a lot of things going on, it was after my car accident, I was traveling a lot and I was trying to figure out who I was. Whatever the reason, they started and they were terrifying.

The first time I had one thankfully I was with a friend, I was gasping for air and not understanding at all what was happening. He looked at me and asked what he could do and all I could manage to say was “lime”. He grabbed the lime oil and got it on my hand. Within a few minutes I was able to breathe in enough to calm my limbic system down and breathe.

I had watched my mom have panic attacks several times growing up. Each time resulted in her ending up in the ER for help. Each time it was hours of getting her the right help and then waiting for the concoction to kick in and then hours of recovery from the “fix”. Then days for me to get my mom back.

I’m so thankful for the doctors that helped my mom. It might be sad to say but I’m thankful that I was able to see that growing up so that when it happened to me, after I was safe and calm, I understood what had happened. Mom I’m so sorry that you had to go through that and grateful that your experience was able to help me.

I’m also grateful that I have many options available to me to get help. What I have found that works for me quickly, and effectively is:

Essential oil right away – My family knows to get Breathe oil or any citrus oil. (you will have to figure out your “happy place” oil) They put a drop on my hand and slowly lift my hand toward my face. Do not get in a person’s face if they are having a panic attack this will only freak them out more. The more control you can give them over their own situation the better.

Calm music, Guided meditations, or affirmations that you know work for you. – You can prep your family to know what helps you the most. Talk about this when life is good. Let your friends and family know how to help you through the attack. You can even write up a formal plan and have your emergency kit in a place that is easily accessible. If you are out, make sure that you have a small emergency kit in your bag/purse.

I have found that using these methods I’ve been able to gain control in just a few minutes. I am so thankful for the love and support of my friends and family. I’m also thankful that this subject is no longer taboo at my house and in my circle. I’m also thankful that if the methods above don’t work for any reason the rest of the plan is put in place. If I’m not able to calm down in a timely manner then we will head to the nearest ER and get professional help.

I hope that you find this information helpful. There are MANY resources available to you, here are a few of my favorites:

  • Essential oils of course! – I carry them with me everywhere. Figure out your “happy place” oils. If you need help with this feel free to contact me and we will do a “sampling”. Kind of like a wine tasting but for your nose.
  • Insight Timer – Best app for guided meditations
  • Lots of water and Exercise
  • Counseling – I think everyone should do counseling at some point in their life. It is so incredibly helpful.
  • Other peoples blogs – here is one written by a good friend of mine
    https://beyondabuseessentialhealing.com/
  • Self help books: Big Magic, You are a Badass, Girl Wash Your Face, Girl Stop Apologizing, Braving the Wilderness, Loving What is. I know that there are a bunch more but these are a good start.

Whatever method you choose to help with your mental health, please know that there is no shame in reaching out for help. This is definitely a road that should not be traveled alone. Please talk about it with friends and family, you might be surprised by how many people not only want to help but might need your help in return.

I LOVE my Postal Delivery Person!!!

Lets talk about Monthly subscription boxes…oh my goodness they rock!!!

So the hottest new things are these Monthly subscription boxes like Cause Box, Mostess or Stitch Fix. How fun!! I love getting something in the mail and who doesn’t love a surprise? Well except what if the stuff that shows up isn’t exactly what you wanted? What if you just bought some of the same stuff in the store last week? Guess what… I have a solution

I’ve been getting a monthly subscription box for the last 6 years. doTERRA calls this Monthly subscription box their Loyalty Rewards Program (LRP) but I like to think of it as a Lifestyle Rewards Program (still LRP.) Here’s the cool thing… I get to choose EXACTLY what I want in my box. I also get to choose how much or how little I order. Not only that I also get shipping rewards AND I earn a percentage of my order back in points that I use to get more free stuff.

What could be better than that?

I’ll tell you…

Someone recently asked me to share what I get in my Lifestyle Rewards Box so that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Every month I have certain “staples” that I always order but then every month I change things up depending on what I’m going to focus on for the month. Well for March I’m going to focus on Spring Cleaning. I know I live in MN and we won’t actually see spring for 2-3 months but I’m an eternal optimist.

This Pic was taken yesterday…you got it folks March 10th…ugh!

Here are the Staples:

Life Long Vitality Vitamins

Mito2Max

Terrazyme

Deep Blue or PB Assist (Depends on which one I need that month)

A Citrus oil, I change this up every month since there are so many choices. This month I need a Tangerine.

Now for the rest of my order. Time to order more cleaning supplies:

OnGuard Laundry Detergent

OnGuard Concentrated Cleaner (SO MANY USES!!!)

OnGuard Foaming Handwash – One For every Bathroom

Purify Blend

My Mom Used To Beat Me

Today’s “Do you dōTERRA daily?” is about how my mom used to beat me. What’s worse is not only did the doctor know about this but encouraged it.

Ok…let me explain; as a child I had a lot of respiratory issues and one of the ways to break up the lung congestion was to beat me. My mom would cup her hand and beat on my chest and back for about 20 minutes several times a day. This would result in my coughing violently and producing a myriad of colorful interesting things coming out of my lungs…TMI???

Why am I telling you this? Recently I was asked about my why, my real why. We have so many reasons why we do certain things and this friend of mine reached deeper, asked deeper questions and I was brought back to my childhood. In elementary school I remember there were a few years that I spent more time at home on the couch then I did at school. I missed out on almost every school party because I was home on the couch and unwell. I missed out on birthday parties, church events and family outings. I missed out…

I don’t want anyone else to miss out. I don’t want any child or adult for that matter to miss out on all the little things that end up being their memories later in life.

So how do I keep mom at bay? How do I keep from repeating a cycle of beating…? LOL Here is my quick daily routine:

I put 1-2 drops of OnGuard on my feet every night and every morning to support my immune system

I take the Life Long Vitality Vitamins daily (I see a whole Blog post about how awesome these are…stay tuned)

I have removed as many toxins from my home as possible, changed out my cleaning products, shampoo/Conditioner, toothpaste and laundry detergent…etc. I’m able to get all of these products from doTERRA. (I see even more posts…yay…stay tuned)

For respiratory support there is nothing better than doTERRA’s Breathe Oil. This lovely blend of Laurel Leaf, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Melaleuca, Lemon, Ravensara and Cardamom is life changing. I love how it opens up my airways without the shaky feeling that can happen with other products that are designed to open your airways quickly. For a quick tutorial on how I actually do this check out this video.

I’m so glad that I have these amazing essential oils that support my body and my family. AND I do have to give a shout out to my mom for lovingly “beating” me to keep me alive…thanks mom.

Paintball hurts…for real!

This should be totally obvious, right? But everyone says how much fun it is, and it is, I guess I just thought they were exaggerating about the pain, they weren’t.

I guess I should explain a bit, a few years ago we started doing Christmas “experiences” rather than tangible gifts. Every year I try to do things I know we like and try something new. This year we escaped 2 different puzzle rooms, those we know we like. We did rock and roll bowling with the cousins, this we found out that we didn’t like. I guess I should preface that, we had a great time with the cousins but bowling isn’t our thing. And our final event was paintball. Ummm, lots of fun was had but wow that hurt lol.

No one told me that I would get hit in the head. I mean I know they have you wear a face mask, and thank goodness they did, but I should have been wearing a full helmet and body armor. I got beaned in the head twice, do you know what that feels like? It’s like being hit in the head with a rock.

The worst spot though was my inner thigh. For everyone’s sake I have forgone the pics that would normally accompany a post like this. As soon as I got hit I knew it was going to leave a mark, I bruise super easily. By the time I got home I already had a pretty impressive mark so I got out my oils and went to work.

Black and Blue Blend,
5 drops Helichrysum,
4 drops Lavender,
3 drops Cypress,
3 drops Lemongrass,
3 drops Geranium

Place in a 5ml roller bottle and top of with a carrier oil. I like fractionated coconut oils as my carrier. Apply often to skin as your body heals. People always ask me how often to apply, well that really depends on the situation. For this particular spot I found for ease of use I applied every time I used the Loo (see how I used the British name there and it sounds so cute rather than TMI, you’re welcome)

It is AMAZING how quickly these essential oils go to work to support my body in natural healing. What would normally take a week or more for my body to absorb was gone in less than 48 hours.
